September 23, 2024
FLORIDA: In a shocking conclusion to a disturbing case, Doris Espinoza-Rodriguez, 40, was found guilty of brutally stabbing her paramour's two children, a 14-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, on January 16, 2023.
The jury delivered the verdict after a four-day trial, convicting Espinoza-Rodriguez of two counts of attempted murder, aggravated child abuse with a weapon, and felony battery.
According to prosecutors, the events unfolded after an argument between Espinoza-Rodriguez and her boyfriend at dinner. Upon returning home, she indicated harming herself but instead unleashed a vicious attack on the family with a knife, stating she'd "go out in a bang."
The 14-year-old boy, hailed as a hero by Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, intervened to save his sister's life, calling 911 while bleeding from stab wounds in his left shoulder and chest area.
Deputies arrived at the scene to find the boyfriend holding down Espinoza-Rodriguez and the 10-year-old girl lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds. The boyfriend, who sustained an injury to his hand while disarming Espinoza-Rodriguez, cooperated with authorities.
Espinoza-Rodriguez claimed self-defense, alleging the father ordered the children to attack her. However, the jury rejected her testimony.
Espinoza-Rodriguez faces at least 20 years in prison for felony battery, up to 30 years for attempted murder charges, and up to life for aggravated child abuse with a weapon counts. Her sentencing is scheduled for December 9.
"This case is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence," said Sheriff Lopez. "We urge anyone in abusive situations to seek help immediately."
