Man Convicted of Murdering Estranged Girlfriend in Front of Toddler

August 25, 2024

FLORIDA: A Florida man has been convicted of second-degree murder in the brutal stabbing death of his estranged girlfriend, Delmy Teyul Ba, in front of her toddler. Orestes Figueredo-Ortega was found guilty by a jury and will face justice for his heinous crime.

Figueredo-Ortega and Teyul Ba had a troubled relationship, marred by domestic violence. In August 2020, Figueredo-Ortega was arrested and charged with domestic battery by strangulation involving Teyul Ba. He was released on pretrial release and ordered to have no contact with her.

On September 17, 2020, Figueredo-Ortega violated the no-contact order and went to Teyul Ba's home at the Sunset Mobile Home Park in Bradenton, Florida. An argument ensued, which turned physical. Figueredo-Ortega choked Teyul Ba, and after she broke free, he grabbed a knife and stabbed her three times in front of their toddler.

The toddler was left alone with Teyul Ba's body until authorities arrived. Mobile home park security video showed Figueredo-Ortega's Chevrolet Cruze entering the area at 11:09 and leaving by 11:19 that morning. Authorities tracked him down to Miami, where he was apprehended.

The investigation was led by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the 12th Judicial Circuit State Attorney's Office. Prosecutors presented evidence, including witness statements and security footage, which placed Figueredo-Ortega at the scene of the crime.

A sworn statement from a detective with the Manatee County Sheriff's Office outlined the case, including the 911 call and the discovery of Teyul Ba's body. The detective's statement also revealed that Figueredo-Ortega had told a witness that Teyul Ba had a knife and "he had to stab her."

On Thursday, the 12th Judicial Circuit State Attorney's Office announced that Figueredo-Ortega had been convicted of second-degree murder with a weapon. Assistant State Attorney Charlie Lawrence, the lead prosecutor in the case, praised the jury's verdict, saying, "Domestic violence is a prevalent issue in our community, and this case is a heartbreaking example of the problem. Law enforcement's quick response and investigative techniques led to the defendant's timely apprehension. Delmy Teyul and her family have obtained justice for her senseless death."
