Michigan Mother Sentenced to 6 Months in Jail After 5-Year-Old Son Fatally Shoots Himself with Unsupervised Loaded Gun

MICHIGAN: A devastating tragedy has led to a Michigan mother being sentenced to six months in jail after her 5-year-old son fatally shot himself with a loaded gun left unsupervised on a dresser. Halisa Lloydnette-Christine Brown, 25, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of her son, Sturlin Minion Jr.
The incident occurred on December 9, 2022, when Detroit police were dispatched to an apartment complex for a reported shooting. Officers found the child suffering from a gunshot wound to the face, and he was taken to a hospital where he died. The parents were quickly arrested, and four other children were taken into the care of Children's Protective Services.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy expressed her frustration with gun owners who fail to store their weapons safely, saying, "How many more children must die? It takes mere minutes to store a gun safely. Is a child's death not worth minutes of one's time?"
Detroit Police Chief James White also spoke out about the incident, calling it "completely ridiculous, irresponsible, stupid, and unnecessary." The gun was left out on a dresser, and the child's father, Sturlin Markese Minion Sr., 33, was also charged in the case.
The community has come together to support the family, with a GoFundMe page set up by the boy's aunt, Silver Minion, who described him as "my amazing, adventurous, handsome nephew." Minion pleaded no contest in the case and is set to be sentenced on September 20.
