Remains of Missing Mom and Child Found in Florida Canal Nearly 50 Years Later

August 13, 2024

FLORIDA: A shocking discovery was made in a Florida canal on Sunday, as the remains of a mother and her child who vanished nearly 50 years ago were finally found. The case, which had gone cold, was reopened in 2023 with the help of a volunteer group called Sunshine State Sonar.

According to NBC6 South Florida, Doris Wurst and her 3-year-old daughter, Caren, were reported missing from their home in Plantation in November 1974. Their vehicle, a 1961 Chevrolet Impala, was also missing. Despite extensive investigations, no leads were found, and the case remained unsolved.

On Sunday, a team of divers from Sunshine State Sonar, partnered with Plantation police, located a vehicle in a canal near the 10100 block of West Broward Boulevard. As they explored the vehicle, they found skeletal remains consistent with an adult and a small child.

"I could see something lying on the back seat. It looked like a purse or something like that. I couldn’t tell what it was, and I reached in, grabbed it and brought it up," a volunteer diver told Local News 10.

While investigators have not officially released the identities of the remains, pending dental records results, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirms that Doris Wurst and her daughter, Caren, disappeared from Plantation in November 1974, in a 1961 Impala.

The story is developing, and more updates are expected soon.
