Utah Babysitter Charged with Murder After Allegedly Slamming Infant's Head into Elevator Wall

UTAH: A 28-year-old babysitter in Utah has been accused of fatally injuring a 4-month-old infant by slamming her head into an elevator wall in an attempt to silence her crying. Zachary Walton faces charges of first-degree felony murder and two counts of second-degree felony aggravated child abuse after the infant, identified as "S.S.," died from her injuries on September 6.
According to court documents, Walton was caring for S.S. and her siblings at the Road Home Shelter in Midvale, Utah, when the incident occurred on August 25. The infant's mother had entrusted Walton with her children's care, describing him as "great with kids."
However, authorities allege that Walton's frustration with S.S.'s crying led him to commit a heinous act. In an interview with police, Walton admitted to slamming the infant's head into the metal corner of the elevator, using significant force and his upper body weight to silence her. He claimed this made S.S. stop crying, but he soon realized the severity of his actions.
Surveillance footage obtained by investigators shows Walton holding a limp S.S. on the roof for approximately 17 minutes, trying to blow in her face. The infant's skin appeared "very pale" when Walton brought her back to the lobby.
A doctor's examination revealed that S.S. had suffered bilateral skull fractures, intracranial hemorrhage, and acute and healing rib fractures, consistent with inflicted trauma. The infant also tested positive for COVID-19 and showed symptoms.
Walton remains held in the Salt Lake County Jail as he awaits trial.
